Most women attribute candidiasis to the thick discharge that is somewhat similar to cottage cheese. However, you must remember that only 1 out of 5 cases of the candida bug manifest this symptom. The itchiness that one feels when infected by this fungus is also accompanied by a burning sensation, and reddening and swelling in the vulvar region.

You may also experience discomfort urinating. However, it is important that you distinguish the symptom of candidiasis and urinary tract infection. With yeast infection, the burning sensation is felt when the urine reaches the outer part while with urinary tract infection, the burning sensation is felt as soon as the urine passes through the urinary tube.

There are basic differences in the symptoms of yeast infection depending on the infection site.

For women with candidiasis, the main symptom is the presence of discharge which has a white cheesy appearance. This is normally accompanied by itchiness within and around the vaginal area and swelling of the vulvar region. There is also the feeling of discomfort during intercourse and burning sensation during urination.

For infants and adults, a yeast infection can have different signs and symptoms:

• Oral candidiasis which is also known as thrush is a thick and white patches atop a reddened base that are found on the palate, the tongue and other parts of the mouth. These white patches resemble the appearance of milk curds which can not be easily wiped away.

• Yeast naturally occurs on the skin but it has to break down the outer surface in order to promote growth and proliferation. Thus, the ideal condition occurs in areas that are moist and warm as in the skin folds and diaper areas. These are superficial yeast infection and they appear as scalloped edges that are sharp and develop red rashes.

• Internal organs of people that are immuno-compromised are prone to candidal infection. The yeast infection results to organ dysfunction and pain. About 85% of people with AIDS have yeast infection known as esophagitis which affects the upper gastrointestinal tract.

• If the yeast gets into the blood, a person can get sick which may or may not be accompanied by fever. If the candidal infection reaches the brain, it can result to mental dysfunction or drastic changes in behavior.
